hey, great job recognizing that it had the same name as a 1970s film, but that and the fact that its about soldiers in WWII is the extent of similarities.

Eckert if Tarantino filmed a dog throwing up you would buy the special edition DVD and argue that is was the greatest movie ever.

and if he worked really hard on it and created some technology to film it, you'd say that he should be nominated for best director.

I do like some of Tarantino's films but most of them are just over-rated. I fell asleep every time I tried to watch Pulp Fiction and Uma Therman is terrible.

Tarantino is great. It's just a fact, regardless of what your opinion is.

Saw two great films over the weekend...The Hurt Locker and The Lovely Bones. Locker was very tense and well done. Great acting too. Bones was suspensful and Stanly Tucci was amazingly creepy in it. Although I haven't seen Avatar yet, I'm pretty sure I'm going to want Locket to win Best Picture. Is the paper going to run any Oscar contest??

Its sad that predicting the winners really isn't much of a challenge anymore. Would be nice if they actually gave the Oscars to the BEST performances/productions each year rather than a popularity contest. But, it's been like that from the start and I doubt that will ever change. Cannot believe that Sandra Bullock is being called a lock for Best Actress for The Blind Side. Although I question her being nominated, even with the 4 other women in competition she is the weakest of the nominees...but she'll win cause she is a popular actress. Same thing with Jeff Bridges, although he is probably more deserving than Sandra Bullock is.

for best actress?

Nothing is a lock, and several of the awards are still unpredictable. I would bet on The Hurt Locker winning some big awards, and that movie winning is anything but a popularity contest. You're right in that the Oscars has made poor choices in recent years, but to be fair, several great--but not blockbuster--movies get recognized and popularized through the Oscars (and the Golden Globes, Cannes, etc).
If the Oscars were more like the Grammys are--that is, based on sales and popularity and not on critical acclaim--then you would see movies like G.I. Joe and Transformers winning best picture or best director, Ashton Kutcher winning Best Actor, Megan Fox winning Best Actress, etc. Things aren't that bad . . . yet.
Also, Jeff Bridges is great. He deserves a shelf full of awards, as does Tommy Lee Jones.
