what types of businesses would you like to see in downtown york? what would you actually support on a continual basis?
for me it would be some kind of bakery and/or diner. i hate having to drive out to the interstate or around town just to get something to eat. i live near the downtown and would love to just be able to walk and get something.
cosmicmuffin - Downtown York in the 80's and early 90's was absolutely awesome. We had sporting goods, shoes, clothing, crafts, diners, drug stores. I remember going to sidewalk sales with my detassling money and coming home with bags and bags of goodies. I really think a good mom and pop lunch diner is needed, I for one, am sick of fast food lunches. OR maybe a t-shirt shop. My kids shop online for t-shirts all the time, band tees, funny tees...that kind of thing.

I want another bank, dance studio and another place to get my hair cut. Also another dentist couldn't hurt either.
I heard that they are building a dentist office on the corner north of the North Casey's where they tore the house down. Does anybody know if this is true?

Downtown York was pretty awesome in the 70', 80's and 90's. There were each 2-3 good women's, men's and shoe stores, and they all did a great business. There were three drugstores, and Holland House, Trofholz Bakery and a couple of small diners. That was a wonderful time to grow up in York. Unfortunately, it's all changed now...people are more mobile and think nothing of getting in the car and driving elsewhere for the day, whereas it used to be kind of a special treat to go to Lincoln or Omaha for the day. And sadly, I don't think that there are as many folks that are willing to put in the hours that Vern and Marilyn did at the bakery, or work some of the hours that wait staff did at the Holland House. It's just a different world out there, and it isn't always for the better. The good thing, Gracie, is that we have heard that Todd and Sally at the Chamber might possibly be working with someone who is very interested in bringing in a bakery/cafe to downtown York. That would be an awesome start on some new additional businesses downtown.
Porthos brings up a good point; you would think with all the competition these hair places have their prices would be better. My family gets their hair done in Benedict at the small shop there for 1/2 the price of any shop in York for the same service. Well worth the 5 minute drive, so I guess it isn't just people driving to Lincoln of GI but to the smaller communities as well. sad....
I WANT TARGET!!!!!!! But sadly that's where all my money would go.
