I would also go for a used bookstore, or a regular independent chain bookstore. I would also splurge money like a fiend on a "daylight donuts" place or something like that. I grew up in Kearney and there were two doughnut shops. They were "the" places where if anything was going on, you would find out about it.
Speaking of Kearney, the chamber of commerce there is who you want to talk to if you want to discuss how you grow a town. They are just bursting at the seems and businesses are popping up everywhere. If there is an ingredient to growth, and not just $7.50 an hour no benefits-part time-dead-end-job growth, they know it.

There is not much support among the business community for start up business's in this town. YNT does a nice write up, but that is about it. People blame Walmart but in reality I think it's the established business's being afraid of outsiders coming in...

I want a shoe store (we used to have 3) an actual department store would be nice.
I checked into some info on a bookstore in York, an actual bookstore owner in Omaha said it would never make it because of the lack of "foot traffic"
When I was a kid growing up here in the 60's and 70's, Thursday night was a BIG Deal with all the stores open and downtown was actually busy.
I f I have to go to Lincoln and GI to buy shoes, I'm going to buying other stuff as well. Too bad for York.Posted 7 months ago # -
Would be nice to see the one way streets go and have ample parking downtown.

Can we get a Cold Stone Creamery in town or what?

evenrude nailed it "in reality I think it's the established business's being afraid of outsiders coming in... "
The rent on some of the places in town is so ridiculous that no new business would be able to afford it. And most of the open places are owned by other business owners in town. That way they don't have to have competition. It's like the old rumor: Long John Silvers can't come to town because another restaurant in town owns the francising right so no one else can bring one in.All the rules and regulations that the city has can somewhat be ridiculous. I had a friend that was going to bring a business to town until they went through everything, no business here. I think sometimes our city doesn't want to grow.

We should build a stadium, like they're doing in Lincoln. That way, we can have a stadium available every 45 minutes as you're driving down I-80.

I would like to see a combination bakery/bookstore such as Blue Moon in Hastings and Grand Island. I've talked to a woman who is at the Farmers Market who is seriously interested in starting a bakery in York. Her cakes and breads are awesome. I just hope if something like this happens, the city supports it. I think it will take a combination business where simple (but good) breakfasts and lunches are served along with nice baked goods, art gallery/gift shop sort of business.

A little off topic but what about the person that won the contest to start a new business in York? Have they started that yet, did they get the money even if they don't open the business?

I heard that they are going into where the old "buckle" store was. I'm excited
