Education

York Public School
The York Public School District covers 109 square miles and is a Class III institution accredited by the State of Nebraska and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. York Elementary School has a 700-student capacity. The middle school is a new $9.6 million facility, recently completed, which opened in the fall of 2007. The high school was built in 1975 and has a 750-student capacity.
The board of education members are Pat Hotovy, Matt Schnell, Phil Towle, Jean Vincent, Tom McBride and Barb Koester. Terry Kenealy serves as the York Public Schools Superintendent.

Parochial Schools
- Emmanuel-Faith Lutheran School: Located at 806 Beaver Ave., enrollment of approximately 215 students in pre-school through eighth grade. The number is 362-6575.
- Larsen Christian Academy: Located at 1122 Delaware Ave., enrolls approximately 35 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The number is 362-2788.
- St. Joseph’s Catholic School: Located at 428 East Ave., enrolls approximately 135 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The number is 362-3021.

College
York College: A liberal arts college founded in 1890, is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. York College is a non-denominational, four-year college and students of all faiths are welcome. Current enrollment is approximately 500 students. The college has expanded many of its degrees from two-year to four-year programs. Numerous bachelor’s degree programs are available — including education and business. They are also associated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Community College
York is a part of the Southeast Community College (SCC) area. Southeast Community College is a public two-year institution with three campuses located in Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford with 29 extension centers located in 15 counties including York. Classes for credit or personal development are offered through York Community Education in cooperation with SCC at various sites in York. SCC offers customized training with area industries, retail establishments and other agencies and organizations in planning in-service and/or in-plant training programs.

York Community Education
Community Education classes are offered throughout the year in York. Academic transfer classes run quarterly and are worth three credit hours. Several non-traditional classes are offered — including sign language, scrapbook making, guitar classes and computer training. CPR, vocational, and industrial classes are offered also. The classes are held at various locations throughout the city. Fall academic transfer classes begin the fourth week in September.

Head Start
Head Start, a federally funded preschool program for low-income children ages 3-5 and their families is available in York County. Sessions are offered at the new facility located at Fifth and Platte Avenue, in York. In addition to classroom work, instructors visit those students and parents at their homes twice a month. Families wanting to enroll their child in class should will need to fill out an application.
